Sturla Holm Laegreid shocked fans during the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics when he spoke about a painful moment from his personal life, moments after winning an Olympic medal. The Norwegian biathlete had just finished third in the men’s 20km individual race, earning a bronze medal for his country.

But instead of only talking about sport, he shared a deeply personal confession on live television. While speaking to Norwegian broadcaster NRK, Laegreid admitted that he had cheated on his girlfriend months earlier. His voice broke as he explained that the medal moment felt incomplete without her support. The confession came as a surprise, especially during what should have been one of the happiest days of his career.

Laegreid revealed that he had met his girlfriend six months ago and had fallen deeply in love. Three months later, he said, he made what he called the biggest mistake of his life by being unfaithful. He told her about it only a week before the Olympic race. According to Laegreid, that week was harder than any competition he had ever faced.

I am sure there are many people who will see things differently, but I only have eyes for her,” he said. “Sport has come second these last few days. Yes, I wish I could share this with her.”The bronze medal was Laegreid’s second Olympic medal. He also won gold in the relay at the 2022 Winter Olympics and is a six-time Biathlon World Champion. Still, he made it clear that none of those achievements felt as important as fixing the damage in his relationship. As of now, Laegreid has not shared his girlfriend’s name or any details about whether they are still together. His comments were shared widely after the broadcast, showing a rare and honest moment from an athlete at the top level of sport.
