What’s inside Tripura's Clouded Leopard National Park, and why it must be on every wildlife enthusiast’s wishlist

When travellers talk about wildlife destinations in Northeast India, names such as Kaziranga, Manas and Namdapha usually dominate the conversation. Hidden away in Tripura, however, is a much quieter wilderness that rarely finds itself on mainstream travel itineraries.

Clouded Leopard National Park, located within the Sepahijala region of Tripura, remains one of the country's lesser-known protected areas, yet it shelters remarkable biodiversity and one of the world's most elusive wild cats. The park derives its name from the clouded leopard, a medium-sized wild cat famous for the cloud-like markings spread across its body. The animal is considered one of Asia's most mysterious predators and is known for its ability to climb trees with exceptional agility.

Spotting one in the wild is extraordinarily difficult, which has only added to the species' mystique. The park was established to strengthen conservation efforts for this vulnerable species and protect the surrounding ecosystem.

Lying 25-30 km away from Agartala, the national park lies in the wider Sepahijala ecosystem of Tripura which boasts of several forests. In contrast to large grassland parks where one can easily spot wild animals, Clouded Leopard National Park presents a totally contrasting environment.

Tropical and semi-evergreen forests dominate in this place, forming a multi-layered eco-system of bamboo bushes, tall trees and vegetation.Due to the dense forest cover, wild animals here remain well concealed, and tourists do not expect to see them at all times. People prefer coming here to explore the ecosystem rather than to have a safari trip and watch wild animals.Besides the clouded leopard, there is much other wildlife in Clouded Leopard National Park.

There are various kinds of mammals like barking deer, slow loris, primates and others. Besides, there is a great number of birds. For this reason, the region is attractive for birdwatching. The results of the camera trap research carried out on protected territories of Tripura revealed the biodiversity value of Clouded Leopard National Park and adjacent protected lands. One of the main advantages of this park is that it provides a very unique experience compared to wildlife sanctuaries in India.

There are no lines of jeeps waiting to enter into the park, no crowds waiting at the points of observation and no competition among visitors to be able to see some specific animals.

The Sepahijala region itself provides a more varied experience as well. This region has long been known for its biodiversity and hosts many plants and animals there. Visiting it, tourists usually combine visits of wildlife with other destinations of Tripura, such as heritage sights or lakes. The most convenient time for visiting this place usually comes in winter and dry season, since forest access becomes easier and people can have better conditions for travelling and observing. The monsoon season brings a lot of precipitation to Tripura and makes movement more complicated. The Clouded Leopard National Park still remains under the radar of tourists, but maybe it is one of the reasons why it can be considered as unique. At times when overcrowding has become the problem of almost any place, this park gives the opportunity to find silence, forest landscapes and wildlife.
