'Whatever Is Being Said About Me...': Sonam Breaks Silence — And Raja's Mother Says 'I Am Scared'

Nearly a year after Indore transport businessman Raja Raghuvanshi was pushed to his death in a Shillong gorge on what was supposed to be his honeymoon, his wife and accused killer Sonam Raghuvanshi has finally broken her public silence — and she wants you to stop believing the rumours.

In an interview to EastMojo, Sonam, currently out on bail and living in Shillong, said everything being said about her is false and urged the public to reserve judgement. But even as she spoke, the questions she refused to answer — about her expenses, her exact whereabouts, and the cloud of allegations swirling around her — did the talking for her.

The interview came days after Sonam’s bail triggered a fresh storm, with a clip of her walking out of court going viral.

Netizens were quick to zero in on what they saw — her smile, her appearance, a mobile phone in hand — and the internet did what it does best: it judged.

Against this backdrop, Sonam’s decision to face the media for the first time was as calculated as it was carefully guarded.

What Did Sonam Actually Say?

Speaking to EastMojo, Sonam kept her answers clipped and defensive. “I have always complied with bail conditions that were granted to me, and I will never violate them," she said.

On where she has been staying since bail, she confirmed she is in Shillong and has not left the city — but declined to reveal her exact location, citing safety concerns. On how she is managing her finances, she was equally tight-lipped: “I do not want to disclose anything about them. This is my personal matter."

On the most explosive rumour currently in circulation — that she plans to leave Shillong for Indore — she was direct: “No, I have no plans to go to Indore at the moment because my case is ongoing here. Until it is concluded, I will not leave."

And on public opinion, which has been overwhelmingly hostile since the case broke last year, she refused to engage. “My case is currently under trial. Therefore, I do not want to comment on it."

What About The Nepal Escape Allegations?

The more serious charge — that Sonam had fled to Nepal with the help of her lawyer, Advocate Sudip Rana — was addressed not by Sonam but by the lawyer himself, who pushed back sharply.

“Just because I am Nepali does not mean I am from Nepal," Rana told EastMojo. He pointed out that both he and Sonam were physically present in Shillong on the day of the interview, in the court premises itself.

“The very fact that she is present today because the matter was fixed today in the court for hearing, and she is personally present in Shillong. This shows that we have never been outside Shillong."

The allegations had come from Vipin Raghuvanshi, brother of the deceased, who had earlier claimed that Sonam had not appeared in court on any date since being granted bail, and that Advocate Rana had “provided complete help in shifting her to Nepal."

Rana’s appearance in court alongside Sonam on the day of the interview appeared to directly counter that claim.

What Is Raja’s Family Saying?

While Sonam was carefully choosing her words, Raja’s mother Uma Raghuvanshi was not holding back. Speaking to ETV Bharat, she said that the moment she saw Sonam on video after nearly a year, she was struck by how changed she appeared — and how unbothered. “It seems like none of this has affected her at all," Uma said. “She has completely changed."

Uma also voiced a fear that many in Raja’s family appear to share: that with Sonam now out of jail, surrounded by family members rallying to her support, anything could happen.

“Her brother, her parents, her maternal relatives — all of them are busy helping her," she said. “I am scared that what happened to my son could happen to us too."

Uma did not stop there. A locket Sonam was seen wearing as she walked out of court drew sharp attention from the grieving mother. “If she had to wear a locket, why did she wear a mangalsutra?" Uma said bitterly, adding that the locket had likely been put on Sonam by her relatives through tantric means.

How Did This Case Begin?

Sonam and Raja Raghuvanshi were married on May 11, 2025 in Indore. Less than two weeks into their marriage, the couple left for their honeymoon in Meghalaya. On May 23, both were reported missing. On June 2, Shillong police recovered Raja’s body from a gorge. Sonam remained missing for days — until June 9, when she was found near a dhaba in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh, and taken into custody.

During interrogation, Sonam confessed that she had conspired with her lover Raj Kushwaha to murder Raja.

The CBI Comparison That Stings

In the middle of making his Nepal allegations to ETV Bharat, Vipin Raghuvanshi could not resist drawing a comparison that cuts to the heart of how India responds differently to different victims.

“In the case of Twisha Sharma of Bhopal, the government issued guidelines for a CBI investigation within eight days," he said.

“If a CBI investigation had been conducted in our case, many more names could have come to light. The administration does not form any high-level investigation committee when boys die."

It is a pointed observation — and one that is likely to stay in the public conversation around this case for a long time.
