New Delhi: WhatsApp has recently reported that they are testing a new privacy feature that could make messages disappear after they are read on Android devices. This latest feature has been spotted in the latest beta version, and it is currently under development.
This feature builds on the existing disappearing messages option, which already enables users to set the messages to vanish after a certain duration. This latest option is designed to offer more control by letting the messages disappear shortly after being seen.
This feature has been found in WhatsApp beta version 2.26.12.2 on the Google Play Store. It also unveils the latest timer option for disappearing messages called as After reading. This builds on the existing disappearing messages feature, which has already enabled users to set messages to vanish after a fixed time.
Currently, the users can choose between 24 hours, 7 days, and 90 days for messages to disappear. The latest option will offer more control, especially for the messages that are meant to be seen only once or for a short duration.
With the latest setting enabled, the messages will disappear 15 minutes after they are read. If the recipient does not open the message, it will automatically disappear after 24 hours. Messages will be removed after 15 minutes, regardless of whether they have been read.
This actually means both sides of the chat will eventually lose access to the message, which helps to keep conversations private. The users will also be able to apply this setting either to specific chats or across all conversations.
This feature has been designed for situations where the messages need to be short-lived. This feature will work even if the read receipts are turned off. The messages will still disappear based on the timer, by ensuring that the privacy is maintained without relying on the read status.
