New Delhi: WhatsApp has started gearing up for its upcoming latest feature called the Green Dot online indicator for selected iPhone beta testers. However, this feature is only available in WhatsApp beta for iOS version 26.26.10.72 via Apple’s TestFlight program.
It was first spotted by several sources, and it also follows a similar rollout on Android beta last month. Rather than displaying only the Online text beneath a contact’s name, WhatsApp now also shows a small green dot on the contact’s profile picture whenever they are actively using the application.
It appears instantly when the contact comes online. Disappeared as soon as they leave WhatsApp, and it also updates in real-time. The Green Dot is not visible in the main chat list. Many observers expect WhatsApp to expand the indicator to the Chats screen eventually, but there is no confirmation yet.
If the users hide their Online status, the Green Dot will not appear. If you cannot normally see someone’s online status, users won’t see the Green Dot either. No additional privacy settings are required because it uses the existing Last Seen and Online preferences.
This feature is going to make it faster to know whether someone is currently available without reading the Online label on their contact. It also brings WhatsApp closer to competing messaging platforms such as Instagram, Facebook Messenger, Telegram, and iMessage. Some sources also indicate that the Green Dot is laying the groundwork for WhatsApp’s upcoming Contacts Hub, the latest section expected to show contacts currently online, recently active contacts, and faster access to available people.
