Dara Singh has left behind a legacy in the form of his portrayal of the role of Hanuman in Ramanand Sagar’s Ramayan. Today, the portrayal of the role by Dara Singh continues to be spoken of in high regard.
Years later, Dara’s son, Vindu Dara Singh, played the similar role in a TV show and live shows, continuing the legacy in his own way.In a past interview, Vindu Dara Singh revealed how his father was supportive of his children’s dreams but was very particular when it came to playing the role of a god, such as Hanuman. For Dara Singh, it was not just a role but a responsibility.Vindu also revealed that his father had given him clear instructions before taking on the role.
He had to keep himself pure by taking a bath and praying before performing. He had to abstain from non-vegetarian food on the days when he played Hanuman. Dara Singh had also told him how important it was to have clean thoughts and play the role with complete sincerity. He had even warned him that if these rules were not followed, there were consequences for his actions.
This shows how seriously Dara Singh took his role as Hanuman.
Sharing his own experience, Vindu said that wearing the costume and saying dialogues had given him a unique sense of energy and strength. He had felt a powerful connection while playing Hanuman, which his father too must have felt during his time.He also remembered a touching and slightly amusing anecdote from his childhood. Even years after the show ended, Dara Singh would sometimes recite Hanuman’s dialogues in his sleep. Vindu remembered his mother waking him up and reminding him jokingly that the show had ended years ago. This anecdote is not only indicative of the commitment of the actor, but also of the faith and discipline Dara Singh thought were necessary while playing a character like Hanuman.
