Every April, the NFL pauses competition and turns to selection. Over three days, its 32 teams take turns choosing college players who will form the next layer of their rosters. Careers begin here, often in a matter of minutes, with decisions that reshape teams long before a game is played. The 2026 NFL Draft follows that structure, running from April 23 to April 25 in Pittsburgh. For viewers, the schedule stretches across late-night and early-morning hours depending on where you are, with live coverage available across television and streaming platforms.
When the 2026 NFL Draft takes place
The draft runs over three days, with each day covering a different set of rounds:Thursday, April 23 — Round 1 (8:00 PM ET)Friday, April 24 — Rounds 2 and 3 (7:00 PM ET)Saturday, April 25 — Rounds 4 to 7 (12:00 PM ET)The event is being held in Pittsburgh, centred around Acrisure Stadium and Point State Park.Because the NFL operates on U.S. Eastern Time, the schedule shifts significantly for viewers in India:Round 1 — Friday, April 24, 5:30 AM ISTRounds 2–3 — Saturday, April 25, 4:30 AM ISTRounds 4–7 — Saturday, April 25, 9:30 PM ISTThe first round usually draws the most attention, as it includes the highest-ranked prospects and often the players expected to become franchise cornerstones.
How the NFL Draft works
At its simplest, the draft is the league’s way of distributing new talent.
There are seven rounds in total, with 257 selections overall, including 33 compensatory picks awarded to select teams. Each round generally features 32 picks, one for each franchise, though the total increases slightly due to those extra compensatory selections.Teams pick in a set order, largely based on the previous season’s results. The team with the worst record selects first, while the Super Bowl winner picks last in each round, a system designed to give struggling teams earlier access to top prospects. In 2026, the Las Vegas Raiders hold the No. 1 overall pick, while the Seattle Seahawks are set to pick at No. 32 in the first round.
Each team is given a limited window to make its selection, which is then announced live, typically by the NFL commissioner, formally adding the player to that franchise. The draft runs across three days: Round 1 on Day 1, Rounds 2 and 3 on Day 2, and Rounds 4 through 7 on Day 3, where later picks, including the final selection, known as “Mr.
Irrelevant” at No. 257, often produce unexpected contributors. Players who are not selected can still sign as undrafted free agents immediately after the draft concludes.
What to expect from the 2026 class
While the draft always includes uncertainty, early projections have focused on quarterbacks, wide receivers and defensive players at the top end.Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza has been widely linked with the No. 1 overall pick, with several teams near the top of the order evaluating him as a potential franchise quarterback.
Prospects from major college programmes, including Ohio State, are also expected to feature early.
Even so, the draft rarely follows projections cleanly. Trades, late selections and unexpected decisions tend to shape the order as it unfolds.
Where to watch and stream the draft
In the United States, the draft will be broadcast live across multiple networks:
- ABC
- ESPN
- NFL Network
- Streaming options include the ESPN App, NFL+, YouTube TV, Hulu + Live TV, DirecTV Stream and fubo.
For viewers in India, the primary option is DAZN through NFL Game Pass, which carries full live coverage of all seven rounds along with analysis.
The draft is also available through the ESPN App and NFL+ in supported regions.Because of the time difference, the first two days fall in the early morning hours in India, while the final day begins late in the evening.

What happens after the draft
The draft does not mark the start of games, but it does begin the next phase of the NFL calendar.Rookie minicamps follow in May and June, giving teams their first look at drafted players. Mandatory minicamps take place in mid-June, bringing full rosters together. Training camps open in late July, leading into preseason games in August.By the time the regular season begins, the players selected over these three days will have moved from prospects to part of the league’s active structure, with roles beginning to take shape long before kickoff.
