The rugged landscape and tribal heritage of Attappady in Palakkad district of Kerala witnessed many stories during the Emergency. One of them was that of veteran communist leader V.S. Achuthanandan’s time in hiding.

The hills and forests of Attappady became a sanctuary for Achuthanandan, who found solace in the warmth and hospitality of the local tribal community.

In the huts of communist stalwart Binnan and Manappa Moopan at Kavundikkal hamlet, Achuthanandan found a sense of home. The bond he forged with the people of Attappady went beyond politics. It was a connection rooted in mutual respect and trust.

Manappa Moopan’s words “VS was dear to Attappady” capture the deep affection the tribal community had for the Communist leader. Even years later, the memories of Achuthanandan’s time in Attappady remain cherished.

According to Moopan, the police launched a search for communist leaders four days into Achuthanandan’s stay in Attappady. They were forced to relocate him to a secluded hut in a farmland inside the forest.

During his time in hiding, Achuthanandan engaged Moopan and others in serious discussions about the country’s pressing social, political and economic issues.

Binnan’s son Shiv Shankar held the responsibility of providing food for Achuthanandan.

Moopan recalled that party workers eventually escorted Achuthanandan to Palakkad in a jeep after a week’s stay in the forest.

As fate would have it, Achuthanandan returned to Attappady as the Chief Minister of Kerala. The same hills and forests that had once provided him shelter now bore witness to his stature as a leader. “It was a moment of pride for us all, who had once harboured him in secrecy,” said Moopan.

Moopan’s eyes moistened with grief as he heard the news of his friend’s death. His voice cracked as he spoke about Achuthanandan. “He may be gone, but the memories of his warmth and camaraderie will stay with me forever,” said Moopan.
