Questions are growing over the condition and whereabouts of Iran’s new supreme leader Mojtaba Khamenei, as new details emerge about injuries he suffered at the start of the war.
Amid speculations, a senior Iranian official has said that Mojtaba Khamenei sustained a minor leg injury during recent US-Israeli airstrikes targeting his compound.
According to Azim Ebrahimpour, Khamenei was present within the compound grounds at the time of the attack and was lightly injured by the blast wave from a missile strike, Iran International reported.
Ebrahimpour dismissed reports suggesting more serious harm, describing them as inaccurate and aimed at fuelling internal division. He said that speculation surrounding Khamenei’s condition was part of a broader effort to spread misinformation.
After Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was killed in strikes on February 28, Tehran announced that his son, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, would take over as the new supreme leader. However, his current condition remains unclear. He has not appeared in public since being named successor. His messages and statements were delivered through state media, raising further questions about his condition and whereabouts.
US officials have said he was wounded during the war. Reports also indicated that Iran’s Guard and other military units are operating without a clear central command.
Earlier, US President Donald Trump questioned whether Iran’s newly appointed Supreme Leader is alive or not.
While addressing an event in Miami, Trump repeated that Iran’s leadership had been eliminated, saying, “No, their leaders are dead. Their supreme leader is no longer supreme. He’s dead. The son is either dead or in very bad shape because nobody’s heard from him."
Earlier this week, a report by Reuters claimed that Khamenei is still recovering from severe facial and leg injuries suffered in the airstrike that killed his father at the beginning of the war.
As per the report, Khamenei’s face was disfigured in the attack on the supreme leader’s compound in central Tehran and he suffered a significant injury to one or both legs, three sources told the news agency.
