The NFL paid tribute to conservative commentator Charlie Kirk following his untimely death, as several teams observed a moment of silence ahead of their Week 2 games. The gesture came after Kirk, 31, was tragically shot and killed during a speaking event in Utah on September 10, 2025.
The league’s decision to hold the tribute during the Packers-Commanders matchup was particularly notable, with Commissioner Roger Goodell present in the stadium.
NFL’s tribute to a national figure sparks mixed reactions
An NFL spokesperson, Brian McCarthy, commented, “There have been a variety of moments of silence and tributes in-stadium and on-air in all games or a game immediately following events that rise to a national level.” He emphasized that the league left it up to home teams to decide whether to hold a tribute, leading to varied responses across the league.
Teams like the Tennessee Titans displayed Kirk’s image alongside his family on the jumbotron as part of their tribute. The Miami Dolphins combined a moment of silence for Kirk with remembrance of the victims of the 9/11 terrorist attacks and “any other victims of violence,” while offering “a prayer for unity in our country.”
A mix of acknowledgments and silence across the league
Other teams, such as the New York Jets, Dallas Cowboys, and New Orleans Saints, also held moments of silence.
The Arizona Cardinals followed suit in their own way. Meanwhile, some clubs, including the Baltimore Ravens, Detroit Lions, and Indianapolis Colts, chose not to hold a specific moment of silence for Kirk during the early or late game windows. Also Read: Jalen Hurts, Josh Allen, Travis Kelce or Aaron Rodgers did not donate $300K to Charlie Kirk’s family, fact check revealsThis decision reflects the league’s open approach, allowing teams to determine their own responses to national tragedies.
