The renovation of the iconic Rose Garden, one of the US President Donald Trump’s biggest changes made since returning to the White House in January, is finally complete, reported NPR News.
The iconic garden, located along the West Terrace between the Oval Office and the Cabinet Room, which has been one of the most iconic lawns in Washington, is now a stone patio. The makeover resembles to the Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach. The renovation of the space has come at a cost of $1.9 million, as per the outlet.
The updated Rose Garden now features tile flooring, formal seating arrangements, and lush green bushes lining the area, all while music plays in the background. According to the news outlet, the US President said the decision was not about style alone. He had argued earlier that the grass had become a problem for guests in heels.
After leading the redesign of the club, Trump has included personal touches to the new outdoor space. He installed a speaker system to play music from his iPad, similar to what he uses at Mar-a-Lago. The area is now furnished with patio tables and yellow-and-white striped umbrellas, which mirrors the style of his Florida estate’s Beach Club.
A visual of the space was shared by Margo Martin, the Special Assistant to the President and Communications Advisor, on X.
The decision to revamp the iconic Rose Garden was made by Trump shortly after he returned to office for his second term in January. One of the most notable changes was the removal of the central grass patch, which has been replaced with stone tiles. Trump explained the decision in a March interview with Fox News, saying, “You know, we use for press conferences, and …. every event you have, it’s soaking wet, and the women with the high heels, it’s just too much."
Although the redesign sparked some opposition, Trump proceeded with the renovation. The updated garden was officially unveiled on Friday, August 1, under the supervision of the National Park Service. In addition to the aesthetic upgrades, a new drainage system was installed to prevent water from collecting in the center of the garden.
The Rose Garden, located along the West Terrace between the Oval Office and the Cabinet Room, was originally developed as a formal garden by the then First Lady Ellen Wilson in 1913 with the assistance of landscape architect George Burnap.
