The Seattle Seahawks just won Super Bowl LX against the New England Patriots 29-13. Jaxon Smith-Njigba had four receptions on 10 targets for 27 yards with no touchdowns in the Big Game.
He had a brief injury scare in the third quarter with the Seahawks leading 12-0. He left for a concussion evaluation but returned early in the fourth quarter when Seattle was leading 19-7.Smith-Njigba was chosen as the NFL Offensive Player of the Year. He comes from a sports-oriented family. Jaxon’s father, Maada Smith-Najigba, played football for Stephen F. Austin University as a linebacker but reportedly did not intend his two sons to follow his footsteps.
Jaxon Smith-Njigba’s father Maada worked for Dallas Fire Department
According to FOX Sports’ Laken Litman, Maada trained his sons from a young age near their house in Rockwall, Texas, about 23 miles northeast of Dallas. After Maada and the boys’ mother divorced, he had to figure out how to care for his sons while he was with them.He worked for the Dallas Fire Department, lived in a one-bedroom apartment, and didn’t own a TV. Going to the movies wasn’t possible financially, so he leaned on what he knew best: sports.
“My goal was to tire them out,” Maada said in Sept. 2022. “So, when we got home, all I had to do was feed them, bathe them, and put them to sleep. Then they started getting on [local] teams, and I was like, ‘Oh my God! These guys are good! They can play!’”

Jaxon’s mother, Jami Smith, often cheers for her son from the sidelines. As his popularity grew, she became defensive of his image. “I can be super petty with all of it [critics and negative noise],” Jami told WFAA in 2023.
“I’m defensive. I’m Mama Bearish. I’m making a list of people who will never have an interview for [Jaxon’s] entire career. I take it very personally. As any parent would, regardless of what your kid is doing.”
Seahawks wideout’s older brother Canaan Smith-Njigba is an MLB player
Canaan Smith-Njigba is a professional baseball outfielder who debuted with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2022. According to his MLB bio, he played three games before suffering a wrist fracture.In Aug. 2024, Canaan signed a minor league contract with the Chicago White Sox and played for the Birmingham Barons and Charlotte Knights.
In Nov. 2024, he chose free agency. According to PEOPLE, he remains a free agent today.Although they play in different leagues and have separate careers, Jaxon and Canaan support each other. “He’s my best friend,” Jaxon said via Heavy Sports. “I give him a lot of credit, just being the older brother going through the things he’s gone through, and me being able to see and adjust.”
Jaxon Smith-Njigba’s African heritage
The Seahawks star player is of Sierra Leonean descent. He was named the NFL African Player of the Week by ESPN in Nov.
2025. According to DAZN.com, Jaxon’s heritage blends cultures, with roots traced to Sierra Leone through his grandparents. This connection to West Africa adds a unique layer to his identity as an NFL player, and he often wears the Sierra Leone flag on his helmet. His father, Kelechi Njigba, brings Nigerian heritage to the family, and his mother, Lakita Smith, is American. This multicultural background has shaped Jaxon’s character and outlook.The wideout was born in Nacogdoches, Texas, but his family’s African heritage remains important to him. “It’s our blood,” Jaxon told FOX Sports’ Laken Litman in Sept. 2022. “My dad made sure we knew where we came from and our background, and how our grandfather had to work for everything and change his name to get jobs. We know things aren’t going to be given to us. We know we have to work for it.”
