BJP Announces Abhishek Kumar as Candidate for Bankipur Bypoll in Bihar
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday named Abhishek Kumar as its official candidate for the by-election to Bihar’s Bankipur Assembly constituency.
The party’s Central Election Committee approved his candidature, and the announcement was made through a statement issued by BJP National General Secretary and headquarters in-charge Arun Singh.
The Bankipur seat fell vacant after BJP national president Nitin Nabin was elected to the Rajya Sabha.
Who is Abhishek Kumar?
Abhishek Kumar has been associated with the BJP organisation for several years and previously served as the Vice-President of the BJP Yuva Morcha in the Bankipur region.
According to party sources, he is considered one of the close associates of BJP national president Nitin Nabin.
Kumar belongs to the Kayastha community, which has a significant presence in the Bankipur Assembly constituency. His selection is being seen as important in view of the constituency’s social composition and political importance.
Prestigious electoral contest
Bankipur is regarded as one of Bihar’s key urban Assembly constituencies and has traditionally been a BJP stronghold. The by-election is expected to witness an intense political contest, with all major parties preparing to campaign aggressively.
With Abhishek Kumar’s candidature now announced, the BJP is expected to step up its campaign in the constituency.
The party plans to seek votes on the basis of the achievements of both the Central and Bihar governments, along with highlighting its organisational strength in the region.
Multi-cornered fight takes shape
The contest is expected to be a multi-cornered one. The Jan Suraaj Party has fielded its founder Prashant Kishor from the seat, while the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) has nominated Rekha Gupta.
With the principal candidates now declared, political parties have begun finalising their campaign strategies and outreach programmes ahead of polling.
The Bankipur bypoll is being viewed as one of the most closely watched electoral battles in Bihar this year because of the constituency’s political significance and the prominent candidates in the fray.
Polling on July 30
The Election Commission has already issued the notification for the by-election, and the nomination process is underway.
Polling for the Bankipur Assembly by-election will take place on July 30, along with two other Assembly bypolls in Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat. The counting of votes will be held on August 3.
