Indian teenager Arnav Paparkar created history at Wimbledon by becoming the first player representing his country to reach the boys’ singles quarterfinals in 36 years, following the legendary footsteps of Leander Paes in 1990. It is yet another significant milestone in the 18-year-old’s rapid rise on the junior circuit.
The ITF Junior World No. 19 defeated Japan’s Ryo Tabata 6-2, 6-1 to book his place in the last eight, having earlier produced one of the biggest upsets of the tournament by knocking out junior World No. 3 Keaton Hance of the United States 6-2, 6-3.
A trainee at the Hemant Bendrey Tennis Academy under coach Prosonjit Paul, Paparkar’s success has been built on meticulous preparation. A football fan, he is known for carefully analysing opponents and maintaining detailed notes ahead of matches.
Before facing Hance, he studied footage of his opponent’s opening-round match to identify weaknesses, then delivered a commanding performance that included six aces, no service breaks conceded, and only 18 points lost on serve.
Standing over six feet tall, Paparkar regards his first serve as the biggest weapon in his arsenal.
His tennis journey began by chance. Born into a non-sporting family, Paparkar developed an interest in the sport after watching players at a court beside the swimming pool he attended as a six-year-old.
Recognising his potential, his parents supported his growth by funding overseas tournaments and training stints in Spain. He also receives backing from the Maharashtra State Lawn Tennis Association, the Mahatennis Foundation, the Maharashtra government’s Mission Lakshyvedh initiative and corporate sponsor Aryan Pumps.
Paparkar’s rise has been steady over the past few years. He won the Australian Open Under-14 Asia-Pacific Elite Trophy and the national Under-16 title in 2023, made his ATP Challenger debut on his 16th birthday in 2024, and lifted the ITF J60 Manama and J200 Kuala Lumpur titles in 2025.
Earlier this year, he became India’s Under-18 No. 1, holding the ranking for 21 consecutive weeks. A third-round appearance at the 2026 French Open juniors propelled him into the world’s top 20 junior rankings, with his historic Wimbledon run further cementing his status as one of India’s brightest young tennis prospects.
