CBI Director Praveen Sood
The tenure of Praveen Sood as Director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has been extended by one year, allowing him to continue in office beyond May 24, 2026.
The extension ensures that Praveen Sood will remain at the helm of India’s premier investigating agency for an additional year after completing his originally scheduled two-year term that began on May 25, 2023 and was followed by another one year extension.
Who Is Praveen Sood?
Praveen Sood is a 1986-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the Karnataka cadre.
He has over three decades of experience in policing, having served in multiple roles across Karnataka Police. His work profile spans law and order management, crime investigation, intelligence coordination and senior administrative responsibilities within the state police setup.
Before being appointed as CBI Director in 2023, Praveen Sood served as the Director General of Police (DGP) of Karnataka, the highest-ranking police post in the state. In that role, he oversaw statewide policing operations and supervised key criminal investigations and security-related functions.
Praveen Sood’s Tenure As CBI Director
As head of the Central Bureau of Investigation, Praveen Sood leads India’s top central investigative agency, which handles corruption cases, financial crimes, serious frauds, inter-state criminal investigations and other complex cases requiring central coordination. His responsibilities include supervising ongoing investigations, managing operational priorities of the agency and ensuring coordination between different investigative units and stakeholders.
Big Challenges Before CBI In Praveen Sood’s Extended Tenure
The extended tenure is expected to see the CBI dealing with several high-profile and resource-intensive investigations across states and sectors. One of the key cases under focus is the RG Kar rape and murder case in West Bengal. The CBI has already chargesheeted the suspect earlier named by the state police.
In West Bengal, Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari recently stated that sanctions have been granted to the CBI to proceed with chargesheets in multiple corruption-related cases involving former ministers and officials linked to the Trinamool Congress government. These cases reportedly include allegations connected to departments such as education, municipalities and cooperatives, including individuals already under investigation by the Enforcement Directorate in related matters.
Another major ongoing investigation is the NEET examination paper leak case, which has drawn nationwide attention due to its scale and impact on students. Multiple CBI teams are working on the probe across states as the agency is also examining links to earlier exam-related leak cases, making it a complex, multi-layered investigation.
