Christy Martin’s story is headed to the big screen, with Sydney Sweeney stepping into her shoes for the biopic Christy. Set to open in American theatres on November 7, the movie made its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 5, 2025.

Known to her fans as "The Coal Miner's Daughter," Christy grew from tiny West Virginia to become one of the most recognizable names in women's boxing. After surviving an almost fatal attack in 2010, she started to campaign for her difficulties.

Born in Itmann, West Virginia, 1968. She fell in love with boxing even while she grew up participating in sports. Turning professional by 1989, she rapidly made a name for herself with an aggressive approach that attracted notice in a sport where women were seldom acknowledged.

Christy Martin: Rise to fame and career highlights

Her big break came in 1996 with a televised win over Deirdre Gogarty that put women’s boxing in front of millions. That night changed everything. Promoter Don King signed her; Christy went on to compete against famous names, including Laila Ali and Sumya Anani.

Christy Martin: The 2010 attack and survival

On November 23, 2010, Christy’s life nearly ended when her then-husband and trainer, James “Jim” Martin, stabbed and shot her inside their Florida home. Somehow, she managed to survive, escape, and later testify against him in court.

He was sentenced to 25 years in prison in 2012 and, according to reports, died behind bars in 2024.

Christy retired from the ring in 2012 after a string of injuries. But she didn’t step away from the fight. She founded Christy's Champs, a charity offering boxing classes and aid for mothers and children fleeing abusive environments, and wed her past rival Lisa Holewyne in 2017. Her narrative of endurance and tenacity inspires people far beyond the boxing world.
