Who is Honey Trehan? All about the filmmaker behind Diljit Dosanjh starrer 'Satluj' who once worked closely with Vishal Bhardwaj

Honey Trehan's name has dominated headlines ever since Diljit Dosanjh's 'Satluj' was taken down from Zee5 shortly after its release in India. While the film has reignited conversations around censorship and artistic freedom, it has also brought renewed attention to the filmmaker behind it.Long before stepping into the director's chair, according to India Today, Trehan had established himself as one of Hindi cinema's most respected casting directors, earning a reputation for discovering the right talent for some of Bollywood's most acclaimed films. He was also widely regarded as one of filmmaker Vishal Bhardwaj's closest collaborators. From being Assistant Director to one of Bollywood's top casting directorsBorn on October 4, 1978, in Sagar, Madhya Pradesh, Honey Trehan entered the film industry as an assistant director.

However, it was casting that helped him carve a unique identity in Bollywood. At a time when casting directors rarely received recognition, Trehan changed the perception of the profession by prioritising performers who best suited a character instead of simply choosing established stars. His work on films such as 'Makdee', 'Maqbool', 'Omkara', 'Kaminey', 'Delhi Belly', 'Talvar' and 'Udta Punjab' earned him immense respect within the industry.

A long creative partnership with Vishal Bhardwaj

Trehan's rise in Bollywood was closely linked with Vishal Bhardwaj. For nearly two decades, he collaborated with the filmmaker on several projects, assisting with direction while also overseeing casting. The duo worked together on multiple acclaimed films, and Trehan eventually became one of Bhardwaj's most trusted creative associates. Along with filmmaker Abhishek Chaubey, they were also associated with MacGuffin Pictures, the production house behind projects including Konkona Sen Sharma's directorial debut, 'A Death in the Gunj'.Because of their long association, many within the industry referred to Trehan as Bhardwaj's "right-hand man."

The project that changed everything

Trehan was originally set to make his directorial debut with 'Sapna Didi', a gangster drama inspired by Hussain Zaidi's book Mafia Queens of Mumbai. The film was expected to star Deepika Padukone alongside the late Irrfan, with Vishal Bhardwaj backing the project as producer. However, in 2017, Bhardwaj announced that he would replace Trehan as director due to "creative differences.""Due to different artistic visions of the film, Honey and I jointly came to the decision that it would be best if I took over as director," Bhardwaj had said at the time.Trehan also maintained that the decision was mutual, saying the differing creative approaches made Bhardwaj the better choice to direct the project.Despite the high-profile cast, 'Sapna Didi' never went into production. The project eventually fell apart following multiple setbacks, including Irrfan's illness, his untimely demise, production hurdles and delays caused by the pandemic.Years later, the story was reworked into 'O' Romeo', directed by Vishal Bhardwaj and starring Shahid Kapoor and Triptii Dimri. The film released earlier this year but failed to make an impact at the box office.

Stepping out on his own

Following his exit from 'Sapna Didi', Trehan made his directorial debut with Netflix's 'Raat Akeli Hai' in 2020.Featuring Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Radhika Apte, the crime thriller was praised for its gripping narrative, atmospheric storytelling and compelling performances.

The film established Trehan as a filmmaker with a distinct voice rather than someone known only for his casting expertise. He also ventured into production and was associated with 'Sharmaji Namkeen', the final film of Rishi Kapoor. Following the veteran actor's death during production, Paresh Rawal completed the remaining portions, making the project a rare example in Hindi cinema.

'Satluj' puts Honey Trehan in the spotlight

Trehan's latest directorial, 'Satluj', has become one of the most discussed Indian films of the year.

Originally titled 'Punjab '95', the film is inspired by the life of human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra, who exposed alleged illegal cremations and extrajudicial killings during Punjab's militancy years.Headlined by Diljit Dosanjh, the film traces Khalra's investigation into disappearances and alleged police atrocities. Written by Honey Trehan, Niren Bhatt and Utsav Maitra, the film blends biographical storytelling with political drama. The project faced years of delays after the CBFC reportedly sought 127 cuts before certification. Its planned screening at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2023 was also cancelled following reported objections from Indian authorities.Although 'Satluj' finally premiered on Zee5 on July 3, it was removed from the platform within 48 hours, triggering widespread debate over censorship, creative freedom and the right to tell politically sensitive stories. From shaping memorable performances behind the scenes to directing one of the year's most controversial films, Honey Trehan has built an unconventional career. Today, with 'Satluj' at the centre of a nationwide conversation, the filmmaker who spent years helping others tell their stories has found himself at the heart of one of Indian cinema's biggest debates.
