Residents hold weddings amid filth and floodwater, so their councillor cut his birthday cake the same way — standing knee-deep in Agra's unclean drain.

The video has sparked a wave of reactions online, ranging from genuine admiration to sharp political jokes.

Kishan Nayak is a BJP ward councillor from Agra’s Ward 12 — and on Thursday, instead of cutting a cake at a party, he waded knee-deep into a stinking, overflowing drain in New Vijay Nagar Colony’s Nagla Dhani area and cut one there, surrounded by locals chanting slogans in light rain. The video has since gone massively viral, and the internet cannot stop talking about it.

Nayak represents Nagla Harmukh ward and has spent three years writing letters — over 30 of them, to the mayor and municipal commissioner — demanding that a drain running from Sultanganj Pulia through Langde ki Chowki to Yamuna river be cleaned and repaired.

The drain, which he says was once a historic royal canal, has not been properly cleaned since 2011. He alleges that on paper, cleaning work has been shown as completed repeatedly — but on the ground, residents have lived with waterlogging, filth, and stench for years. Three people — two children and a farmer — have died falling into the drain, and one child remains unaccounted for.

Why Did He Protest On His Birthday?

Nayak says the timing was deliberate and symbolic. Residents of his ward, he said, are forced to carry out weddings, festivals, and family events amid garbage and floodwater — so he chose to celebrate his own birthday the same way. “We celebrated a birthday in the drain to draw the administration’s attention to this serious problem," he said, adding that with monsoon approaching, the unresolved waterlogging poses serious health and flooding risks.

What Is The Internet Saying?

The video has sparked a wave of reactions online, ranging from genuine admiration to sharp political jokes. @mr_mayank captured the mood best in a widely shared post: “Bro didn’t care about what action BJP will take, bro didn’t worry about ED. Bro stood for his own people. Bro is a good man in a wrong party. Be like bro." The post noted that Nayak had complained to higher authorities — all BJP-ruled — at least 12 times without result, with neither the local MLA nor MP stepping in.

Others were more pointed about the institutional dysfunction. @YTKDIndia wrote that when one department passes the file, another passes the responsibility — and the drain stays exactly where it is.

@DikshaKandpal8 noted that Nayak himself invoked the Prime Minister’s flagship scheme, saying Modi’s Swachh Bharat mission isn’t being implemented on the ground — pointed criticism coming from within BJP’s own ranks.

The meme brigade, meanwhile, had a field day with the image of a ruling party councillor protesting against his own party’s civic administration — with several users joking that BJP had found a new way to protest itself. The backdrop of Agra’s Smart City tag made the optics sharper still.
