Israel carried out airstrikes in eastern Lebanon that killed dozens after a covert raid linked to missing Israeli pilot Ron Arad reportedly failed.

The strikes followed an Israeli airborne operation aimed at recovering the remains of Arad, whose disappearance nearly four decades ago remains one of Israel’s most enduring military mysteries.

Ron Arad was an Israeli Air Force navigator who went missing in October 1986 after his fighter jet was shot down during a mission over Lebanon. He ejected safely but was captured by the Shiite militia group Amal.

For years, Israel pursued diplomatic and intelligence efforts to locate him. Early evidence suggested he was alive in captivity, but his fate later became uncertain. Israeli officials believe he may have been transferred between militant groups or moved to Iran.

Despite decades of investigations, negotiations and intelligence operations, Arad has never been recovered. His case remains a powerful symbol in Israel, and successive governments have vowed to continue efforts to bring him home.

Strikes Follow Failed Recovery Operation

According to reports, the latest Israeli operation aimed to retrieve Arad’s remains based on new intelligence. However, the raid reportedly did not succeed, prompting a broader wave of Israeli airstrikes across eastern Lebanon.

The Israeli military has not released full details about the mission, but officials indicated that the strikes targeted militant infrastructure in the region.

Lebanese authorities said the bombing caused heavy casualties and damage in several areas. The escalation has raised concerns about a wider conflict along the Israel–Lebanon border.
