Sameerah Munshi, the sole Muslim woman on the White House Religious Liberty Commission, has resigned over the Trump administration’s military intervention in Iran, which she alleges is “illegal".
Munshi, who was appointed by President Trump in 2025, stepped down after alleging “injustice and atrocities" perpetrated by the US administration both “at home and abroad".
She said the move was meant to protest the dismissal of Commissioner Carrie Prejean Boller, who was fired last month after using a hearing on antisemitism to voice her criticism of Israel and Zionism.
In her letter posted to Substack, Munshi alleged people of faith are having their “free expression stripped away", adding this was for the sake of what she described as a “Zionist political agenda".
“In this country, people of faith are having their free expression stripped away, and even their lives put at risk, because of their deeply held beliefs about Palestine, all for the sake of a Zionist political agenda," she stated.
“The removal of a Catholic commissioner for expressing dissenting views grounded in her faith is the exact affront to free expression and religious liberty that I spoke out against", Munshi added.

She stressed the resignation didn’t come out of “fear or intimidation" from anyone associated with the Commission or the administration.
“I am not resigning out of fear or intimidation from anyone affiliated with the Commission, the government, or any interest group. I am resigning because I have seen firsthand the injustice perpetrated by members of this commission, and I am unwilling to be associated with it any longer", Munshi said.
‘Illegal War Against Iran’
Sameerah Munshi also expressed her deep dissent over the joint US-Israel war on Iran, calling it “illegal".
“I resign in protest of two deeply troubling developments: the official removal of Carrie Prejean Boller for her deeply held beliefs about Palestine and the federal government’s illegal war against Iran, undertaken without clear constitutional or congressional authorization", she said in her statement.
The resignation came nearly two weeks after the United States and Israel launched coordinated strikes on Iran, as negotiations over Tehran’s nuclear programme came to a near-standstill.
