Star Washington Spirit and United States of America forward Trinity Rodman on Thursday became the world’s highest-paid women’s footballer ever, after she signed a record deal with Spirit. She agreed to a contract through 2028 worth over $1 million per season.

The move came amidst strong interest from leading European clubs, including teams in England, prompting the National Women’s Soccer League to tweak its salary structure in order to retain top talent at home.

Rodman, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2021 NWSL Draft, has been a key figure for both the Washington Spirit and the USWNT. With a landmark deal bagged, here is everything you need to know about her.

Rodman was selected second overall by the Spirit in the 2021 NWSL Draft, making her the league’s youngest-ever draftee at just 18. She went on to help the club lift the NWSL Championship and earned NWSL Rookie of the Year honours, along with a spot in the NWSL Best XI First Team, in her debut season.

Rodman was named US Soccer’s Young Female Player of the Year in 2021 and made her senior debut for the United States in 2022. She went on to score three goals at the Paris Olympics, helping the US clinch the gold medal.

Rodman was born in Newport Beach, California, to Michelle Moyer and former professional basketball player Dennis Rodman and was raised in Southern California alongside her brother, DJ Rodman, by their mother.

Rodman started playing football at the age of four and has said that the sport ‘felt like home’ by the time she was seven or eight. She was encouraged by her mother and sister to chase her dream of becoming a professional footballer.

Rodman started playing club football with SoCal Blues at the age of 10, helping the team win four national championships in the Elite Clubs National League and remain unbeaten for five straight years.
