The decision by the Congress-led Telangana government to rename a road in Hyderabad after US President Donald Trump has drawn criticism from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which accused it of hypocrisy over its stance on the Republican leader and on India’s relations with the United States.
Telangana BJP president Ramchander Rao questioned Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy’s move to inaugurate “Donald Trump Avenue" while Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has repeatedly criticised the Centre’s engagement with the US President.
“Mr Revanth Reddy is now inaugurating a road, an avenue called a Donald Trump Avenue in Hyderabad. On one hand, his leader Rahul Gandhi says that ‘India surrendered to Trump.’ This is the totally opposite view of Revanth Reddy from that of what Rahul Gandhi.," Rao said.
“Now Mr Rahul Gandhi should tell whether Revanth Reddy has surrendered to Trump Or Rahul Gndhi surrendered to Trump. At least now Rahul Gandhi and Revanth Reddy and Congress people should stop uttering these words, because on the other hand, it’s you who have compromised with many countries. In fact, you have surrendered the national interest to many countries," he added.
The road, located next to the US Consulate in Hyderabad’s Financial District, is scheduled to be formally inaugurated on June 23.
Meanwhile, the Telangana government has maintained that the initiative is intended to highlight Hyderabad’s growing economic and diplomatic ties with the US and strengthen the city’s global investment profile.
Chief Minister Revanth Reddy had first proposed naming the road after Trump in December 2025, though the plan was briefly put on hold amid global uncertainties, including the US tariff dispute and tensions in West Asia.
According to reports, the inauguration ceremony is expected to be attended by US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor and will be part of a series of diplomatic engagements ahead of the United States’ Independence Day celebrations on July 4.
While the state government has projected the move as an economic and diplomatic gesture, the BJP has framed it as evidence of contradictions within the Congress leadership.
