The football world has been left in shock following the devastating news of the tragic deaths of Liverpool star Diogo Jota and his brother André Jota.
According to Spanish news outlet Marca, the fatal accident occurred while Diogo was driving from Penafiel. The vehicle veered off the road and caught fire shortly after the crash. Eyewitnesses reported that the car was quickly engulfed in flames, with the blaze spreading to surrounding vegetation.
Also killed in the crash was Diogo’s brother, André Silva, a professional footballer competing in Portugal’s second division.
André Jota’s Football Career
André Silva—known professionally as André Jota—was an attacking midfielder who joined FC Penafiel in 2023 after a stint with Gondomar. Over the course of his career, he also featured for the youth and under-23 teams at Boavista and FC Famalicão.
At the professional level, André made 102 appearances and scored 17 goals, primarily operating as a forward. During the most recent season, he contributed significantly to Penafiel’s campaign, scoring two goals and providing five assists in 32 matches to help the team secure an 11th-place finish in Liga Portugal 2.
The heartbreaking news has sent ripples through the global football community, with an outpouring of tributes and condolences.
“The Portuguese Football Federation and all Portuguese football are completely devastated by the deaths of Diogo Jota and André Silva, this morning, in Spain," wrote Pedro Proença, President of the Portuguese Football Federation.
“Much more than an amazing player, with almost 50 caps for the National A Team, Diogo Jota was an extraordinary person—respected by teammates and opponents alike, known for his infectious joy, and a true role model in the community."
“On my behalf, and on behalf of the Portuguese Football Federation, I express my deepest condolences to the family and friends of Diogo and André Silva, as well as to Liverpool FC and FC Penafiel, the clubs where they played."
The federation has requested a minute’s silence ahead of Portugal’s Women’s European Championship match against Spain on Thursday.
“Portuguese football has lost two champions. We will do everything possible to honor their legacy every day," Proença added.
Supporting His Brother’s Career
André had long been a supportive and constant presence in Diogo Jota’s life. From Diogo’s early days at Paços de Ferreira to his rise at Liverpool and with the Portuguese national team, André was frequently seen at matches and events, offering both personal and professional support.
