The death of 26-year-old Bharat Bhushan Tiwari in a police encounter in Bihar’s Bhojpur district has triggered a political storm, raising questions over the use of force by police and prompting demands for an independent investigation.

According to media reports, the controversy has now reached the Supreme Court even as the Bihar government has ordered a judicial probe into the incident.

Who Was Bharat Tiwari?

Bharat Tiwari, a resident of Bilauti village in Bhojpur’s Shahpur area, was known locally for highlighting issues such as flooding, river erosion and displacement through social media. According to his family, he had no criminal record and often used Facebook to speak about public concerns.

What Happened On June 17?

Police say Tiwari was carrying an illegal firearm and fired at officers when they attempted to arrest him on June 17. Officials claim they retaliated in self-defence, leading to the encounter in which Tiwari was shot and later died during treatment.

However, his family and villagers allege that Tiwari had surrendered before being shot. They claim he threw away his weapon and that videos circulating on social media suggest he was unarmed when police opened fire.

Bihar Government Orders Judicial Inquiry

Amid mounting public anger and political pressure, Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary announced a judicial inquiry into the incident. The probe will be conducted by a retired High Court judge to examine all aspects of the encounter. Four police personnel, including the station house officer concerned, have reportedly been suspended pending the investigation.

Matter Reaches Supreme Court

The controversy has now reached the Supreme Court. A public interest litigation has been filed seeking a CBI investigation into Tiwari’s death, registration of an FIR against the police personnel involved and the formation of an independent committee headed by a retired Supreme Court judge to oversee the inquiry. The petition argues that if Tiwari had indeed surrendered, the use of lethal force may amount to an extrajudicial killing.

The case has also sparked political reactions, with opposition parties and civil society groups demanding accountability and a transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding Bharat Tiwari’s death.
