Keith Mitchell, the former New Orleans Saints Pro Bowl linebacker who rose from an undrafted rookie to one of the NFL's most respected defenders, has died at 51. His family confirmed the news on Thursday, July 2, telling KBTX that his death was "sudden and unexpected."
They did not disclose a cause of death.Mitchell earned praise long before he reached the NFL. He starred at Texas A&M, built one of the best defensive resumes in school history, and later proved he belonged in the league after every team passed on him in the 1997 NFL Draft.

Keith Mitchell's family shared the news in a statement released to KBTX on July 2. "As we begin to process this heartbreaking loss, we ask for your continued prayers as we await additional answers in the days ahead," the family said in the statement.
"We trust that God will continue to surround our family with His peace, grace, and strength as we navigate this difficult journey."
Born in Garland, Texas, Mitchell played at Texas A&M from 1993 through 1996. He became a key piece of the Aggies' famous "Wrecking Crew" defense and helped the program win the Southwest Conference championship in 1993.His production never slowed. Mitchell collected 34 career sacks, which still rank fourth in school history.
His 14.5 sacks during the 1996 season remain tied for one of the best single-season marks the Aggies have ever seen. He also posted 13 sacks in 1995, another total that still ranks among the program's finest seasons.Those performances earned him All-Southwest Conference honors in 1995, All-Big 12 recognition in 1996 after Texas A&M joined the new conference, and consensus All-American honors during his senior season.
His career sack total still sits ahead of former Aggies stars Von Miller and Myles Garrett.Mitchell's impact at Texas A&M went beyond the stat sheet. He earned the Defensive MVP award in the 1995 Alamo Bowl after helping the Aggies beat Michigan. By the end of his college career, he had become one of the faces of the "Wrecking Crew" defense, a unit that produced several standout NFL players during the 1990s

Despite his college success, Keith Mitchell did not hear his name called during the 1997 NFL Draft because teams questioned his size.
The Saints signed him as an undrafted free agent, and he quickly rewarded their faith.Mitchell spent five seasons in New Orleans Saint and reached the peak of his career in 2000. He finished that season with 86 tackles, 6.5 sacks, four fumble recoveries, one interception, five passes defended, and two defensive touchdowns. His all-around play earned him his first and only Pro Bowl selection. He later spent the 2002 season with the Houston Texans before joining the Jacksonville Jaguars for his final NFL season in 2003.Across 94 regular-season games, including 70 starts, Mitchell recorded 416 tackles, 19.5 sacks, 10 forced fumbles, and four interceptions. Texas A&M honored his impact years later by inducting him into the Athletics Hall of Fame in 2015.Keith Mitchell's football journey never followed the expected path.
