Mohamed Lamine Benredouane, the Montreal police constable who was killed along with two others, including the alleged gunman, was not supposed to be on shift on Monday when a gunman opened fire in a partly Jewish neighbourhood that includes kosher markets and restaurants.
According to Canadian newspaper The Gazette, Benredouane was not scheduled to work on Monday and had taken an overtime shift to earn extra money.
The midday shooting in Montreal killed three people, including Benredouane, a civilian and the alleged gunman.
The civilian who was shot dead has been identified as a member of Montreal’s Jewish community.
Flags were lowered to half-mast as the city mourned its first police officer killed in the line of duty at the SPVM in 24 years.
French-language public broadcaster Radio-Canada reported that the gunman was linked to “incel" ideology — a misogynistic worldview that inspired the perpetrator of one of Canada’s deadliest mass killings, the 2018 Toronto vehicle-ramming attack that left 10 people dead.
“Incel" stands for “involuntarily celibate" and is associated with heterosexual men who are driven towards extremism over their perceived inability to find women willing to be their partners.
Montreal Police Chief Fady Dagher described Monday’s incident as “a tragedy, a nightmare".
Dagher also remembered Benredouane as a dedicated officer.
“I can tell you he was excellent — he was an excellent police officer," he said. “When you become a police officer, you know the risks. But you never expect something like this to happen."
