Héctor Rusthenford Guerrero Flores, better known as “Niño Guerrero", was one of Latin America’s most wanted criminals and the leader of the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua. On Friday, Venezuela and the United States announced that Guerrero had been killed during a joint operation in Bolivar state, marking the end of a years-long international manhunt.

The operation, which involved intelligence-sharing and what Venezuelan authorities described as “specialized technological support" from the United States, targeted Guerrero and members of his organization in southeastern Venezuela. US President Donald Trump said American forces carried out a “swift and lethal kinetic strike" in coordination with Venezuelan authorities.

From Prison Inmate to Crime Kingpin

Born in Maracay in Venezuela’s Aragua state, Guerrero’s criminal career began at a young age. Over time, he rose through the ranks of the country’s underworld before emerging as the undisputed leader of Tren de Aragua, a gang that originated inside Venezuela’s Tocorón prison.

What made Guerrero notorious was his ability to run a criminal empire from behind bars. Authorities say he transformed Tocorón prison into the de facto headquarters of Tren de Aragua, directing operations ranging from drug trafficking and extortion to kidnappings and human smuggling.

The Prison That Became a Criminal Kingdom

Under Guerrero’s leadership, Tocorón became infamous worldwide. When Venezuelan authorities eventually raided the prison in 2023, they found amenities rarely associated with a correctional facility, including a swimming pool, zoo, restaurants, bars, a baseball field and a network of tunnels used by gang members. Guerrero escaped before security forces regained control of the prison.

His escape triggered an international search operation as authorities feared he would continue directing the gang’s activities from hiding.

Building a Transnational Crime Network

US prosecutors and international investigators allege Guerrero was the mastermind behind Tren de Aragua’s transformation from a local prison gang into a sprawling transnational criminal organization operating across Latin America, the United States and parts of Europe.

The group has been linked to drug trafficking, human trafficking, migrant smuggling, extortion, kidnappings, contract killings and money laundering. It expanded rapidly during Venezuela’s migration crisis, establishing cells in countries including Colombia, Peru, Chile, Ecuador and the United States.

Wanted Across the Americas

Guerrero was sought by authorities in multiple countries and faced charges ranging from homicide and drug trafficking to organized crime and terrorism-related offences. The US government had offered a reward of up to $5 million for information leading to his arrest.

In late 2025, US federal prosecutors charged him with racketeering, drug trafficking, weapons offences and providing support to a terrorist organization, describing him as the architect of Tren de Aragua’s global expansion.

Why His Death Matters

The killing of Guerrero is being seen as a major blow to Tren de Aragua, which Washington designated as a Foreign Terrorist Organization earlier this year. US officials have described the gang as one of the most dangerous criminal groups operating in the Western Hemisphere.

However, security experts caution that the gang’s extensive international network may continue operating even after the loss of its long-time leader. The coming weeks will reveal whether Guerrero’s death weakens the organization or triggers a struggle for control within its ranks.
