China has stepped up diplomatic efforts to position itself as a global peace broker amid the ongoing US-Iran conflict, a move that could complicate Pakistan’s parallel outreach to Washington, reports suggest.

Beijing’s latest initiative, a joint five-point plan aimed at restoring stability in the Gulf and West Asia, comes at a time when Islamabad has been actively engaging the United States on regional issues, raising questions about the trajectory of China-Pakistan ties.

Pakistan Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar’s visit to Beijing, shortly after sustaining a minor injury, coincided with the announcement of the peace proposal following his meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.

China Watches Pakistan’s US Tilt

China has reportedly grown uneasy over Pakistan’s increasing engagement with the US, particularly after Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Army Chief Asim Munir’s high-profile meeting with President Donald Trump in June 2025.

While Beijing continues to publicly emphasise its “all-weather friendship" with Islamabad, analysts say it is closely assessing how far Pakistan can move closer to Washington without affecting its strategic alignment with China.

Reports indicate that Beijing remains wary of Islamabad attempting to balance ties between the two rival powers.

Strategic Concerns Over US-Pakistan Engagement

Analysts have pointed to concerns within China that closer US-Pakistan ties could serve Washington’s broader strategy to create divisions between Beijing and Islamabad.

There are also apprehensions that increased cooperation, including in energy and intelligence, could allow the US to gain access to sensitive information about Chinese military systems deployed in Pakistan.

This has reportedly caused unease within China’s defence and foreign policy circles, particularly amid speculation of US pressure on Pakistan regarding Chinese military activities.

Regional Pressures Add To Beijing’s Worries

China’s concerns are also shaped by broader regional developments. Ongoing tensions involving Iran, as well as instability in Afghanistan, have complicated Beijing’s strategic and economic interests, including projects under the Belt and Road Initiative.

Additionally, shifts in regional diplomacy, including the Taliban’s outreach to India and evolving political dynamics in Bangladesh and Nepal, are seen as further challenges to China’s influence in South Asia.

Peace Plan Amid Geopolitical Rivalry

China’s peace initiative comes even as the US views Beijing’s neutrality with scepticism, given its close ties with Iran and Pakistan, and ongoing strategic rivalry with Washington.

For Beijing, the evolving situation raises a key question: whether Pakistan will continue to prioritise its partnership with China or increasingly adopt a balancing approach between Washington and Beijing, a scenario that could reshape regional geopolitics.
