The World Cup is just a few months away, but something unexpected has happened behind the scenes. FIFA has suddenly canceled thousands of hotel rooms it had already booked in host cities.
No clear reason has been shared so far. This decision has left hotel groups surprised, but they are now adjusting quickly as rooms return to the market for fans. In Philadelphia alone, around 2,000 hotel rooms were canceled. Earlier, FIFA had reserved close to 10,000 rooms in the city. The cancellations affected four hotels in the city center. Similar changes have also happened in Mexico City, another key host location.
There too, hundreds of rooms were released after being booked months ago.Hotel groups say they were not given a detailed explanation. Still, they are not treating it as a major problem since the demand from fans is expected to stay high.
FIFA cancels hotel bookings in Philadelphia and Mexico City as organizers quietly adjust plans before World Cup
These are rooms that are going to be put back out on the marketplace and sold to fans who want to come to Philadelphia.”This shows that even though the change was sudden, hotels believe they can still fill those rooms. With the World Cup getting closer, many fans are expected to travel, so demand should stay strong.A similar situation is unfolding in Mexico City. Alberto Albarrán Leyva, director general of the city’s Hotel Association, explained what happened.
He told El Financiero that FIFA had originally booked around 2,000 rooms but later canceled about 800 of them.He also shared more details in an interview with ESPN. He said, “FIFA booked 2,000 rooms months ago to prevent (running short) and guarantee its operation. Over time, it cancelled some reservations because it realised that it was no longer going to use them. There is no other reason or other type of context.”From what officials are saying, it looks like FIFA simply adjusted its needs after reviewing its plans. Still, the lack of a clear public explanation has raised questions. For now, hotels are moving forward. Instead of worrying about the cancellations, they are focusing on selling those rooms to fans who are planning to attend the World Cup.
