Morocco’s national team has once again drawn attention during the FIFA World Cup 2026, but this time many viewers are asking a different question. Fans watching broadcasts have noticed that Morocco appears as “MAR” on scoreboards instead of “MOR.”
The answer has nothing to do with football results or tournament rules.
It comes from the country’s name in another language. FIFA uses three-letter country codes for every team, and Morocco’s code follows a naming tradition that has been in place for years. Why Morocco appears as MAR on FIFA World Cup scoreboards
French has played an important role in Morocco for many years and remains widely used across the country alongside Arabic and Tamazight.Because of that connection, FIFA uses MAR as the official three-letter code for Morocco during international competitions, including the FIFA World Cup.Morocco is not the only country with a different FIFA code
Spain appears as ESP, which comes from España, the country’s name in Spanish. Saudi Arabia is listed as KSA, short for Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. South Korea uses KOR instead of another variation based on its common English name. These codes are part of FIFA’s official system and are used consistently across tournaments, rankings, match reports and broadcasts.Morocco’s FIFA World Cup success brought new attention to MAR
