Defending champions Argentina have reportedly asked FIFA for permission to wear their blue away kit instead of their iconic sky-blue and white jersey when they face England in the ongoing 2026 World Cup semi-final in Atlanta on Tuesday.
Ass per Argentine journalist Gastón Edul, Argentina have sent a request ahead of the blockbuster last-four meeting, with Lionel Scaloni’s side hoping to take the field in the all-blue kit they have worn only once during the tournament.
Argentina have preferred their traditional striped home shirt throughout the World Cup campaign, switching to the blue alternate strip only during the 3-1 group-stage victory over Jordan at the Dallas Stadium where they return for the semi-final clash.
FIFA though will reportedly have the final say on kit allocations for knockout fixtures, with decisions based on potential colour clashes, visibility and broadcast requirements.
Why Argentina Want To Play In All-Blue Kit?
There’s no official word on why the special request has been made but it could be as a good luck charm given both their triumphs over England in world cups came when they were wearing navy or dark blue jersey.
The second semi-final of the FIFA World Cup 2026 will be the latest chapter in what’s one of international football’s most storied rivalries.
England secured their place in the final four after overcoming Norway in the quarterfinals, while Argentina advanced with a 3-1 victory over Switzerland to continue their title defence.
Messi has once again been central to Argentina’s run.
The eight-time Ballon d’Or award winner heads into the semi-final as one the tournament’s leading scorers as Scaloni’s side chase consecutive World Cup titles following their triumph in Qatar in 2022.
Amazingly, this will be the first time that Messi will be facing England at international level.
“Everything I have seen and remember [about Argentina vs. England from 1986] is from videos and images that Argentinians constantly watch and relive," Messi said in an interview with ESPN Argentina. “But I think this group is used to playing football matches regardless of the opponent.
“Obviously, playing against England is special because they are a powerhouse, and matches against powerhouses are always special. Personally, it’s the first time I’m going to play against them. I’ve played against everyone except England, so it will be nice for that reason too. And we’ll experience it for what it is: a World Cup semi-final against a powerhouse, a great team, and we’ll try to arrive in the best possible shape to compete again," he added.
