After losing to fourth division club Grimsby Town FC in the penalties and a humiliating exit from the Carabao Cup, Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United were on the brink of another loss, this time in the Premier League match against Burnley, but a 90+7th minute penalty conversion from Bruno Fernandes led to a relieving win for both the club and the coach.
United took a lead in the game not once but twice before Fernandes sealed the game in the extra time, but on both occasions, Burnley levelled the game with two impressive goals.
After a poor show against Grimsby, Andre Onana was expectedly dropped and Altay Bayindir replaced him in the XI and coach Amorim admitted the goalkeeper job, especially at Man United, is a lot more difficult with all the scrutiny.
“They are humans. At Manchester United everything is the news. Everybody talks about the goalkeeper and you can see even when I change the goalkeeper these situations happen. We are in that moment. It’s hard to be a Manchester United goalkeeper in this moment. If you look at the goal, we can defend better the box. We suffered a similar goal against Fulham because we don’t do the full rotation of the team when the ball is on the other side,” he said after the game.
‘Everybody has to improve’
Bayindir conceded two goals from Burnley’s six shots at goal and was at fault for Jaidon Anthony’s goal after spilling a shot following a long throw-in.
“These things don’t have anything to do with the goalkeeper. All these small things have nothing to do with the goalkeeper. Players are struggling a little bit with all the things that are happening around the club, that is normal. It’s not just the goalkeepers; everybody has to improve,” added Amorim.
The Reds Devils will take on arch-rivals Manchester City in the next Premier League game.
