Why sleep on your left side
Ayurveda has connected all the dots from sleeping to our eating patterns, and has given reasons as to why we should sleep on our left side:
It aids in digestion
Sleeping on our left side encourages the waste flow from the small to the large intestine. Sleeping on your left side allows digestive enzymes and bile to mix with food more effectively and supporting the smooth transit of waste into the large intestine via gravity.
It allows for proper lymphatic drainage
Sleeping on the left side is the key to draining lymph, according to Ayurveda, and it also helps in purifying blood. It supports in toxic removal and aids in efficient lymph drainage.
It supports heart health
The left-side position reduces pressure on the inferior vena cava, easing blood return to the heart. This reduces the cardiac strain on the body, especially during sleep, that allows the heart to work more efficiently.
It balances the “Vata” in the body
Ayurveda emphasizes Apana Vata, which is responsible for elimination, and which flows downwards to the left. This position supports its natural direction, aiding in bowel movements and reducing constipation.
It reduces acid reflux
Sleeping on the left side improves sleep quality, breathing and puts less strain on our internal organs. It contributes to more restful sleep. Both Ayurveda and modern science acknowledge these calming effects.
