US President Donald Trump unexpectedly switched from the newly retrofitted Qatari-donated Air Force One to an older presidential aircraft while returning from the NATO summit in Turkey, sparking fresh questions over security amid escalating tensions with Iran.

However, reports have emerged that the new aircraft lacks some of the advanced defensive systems fitted on the older presidential jet. According to New York Times report, citing officials familiar with the matter, the Boeing 747-8 gifted by Qatar does not include the same countermeasure systems, including advanced anti-missile capabilities, that have long been standard on the existing Air Force One fleet.

The issue made the headlines after Trump flew to Turkey aboard the new aircraft but returned on the older Air Force One. As per the report, the Secret Service advised the switch over security concerns, particularly given Turkey’s proximity to Iran amid heightened regional tensions. Trump, however, claimed in a Truth Social Post that he chose the older aircraft so the new jet could visit US military bases and be showcased to troops.

While the US Air Force has acknowledged that the jet does not carry every system found on the traditional presidential aircraft, it has maintained that there was “no risk" to security, safety or mission communications.

Trump pushed for the new plane to be put into use as quickly as possible and frequently complained that the old presidential aircraft was not impressive enough to take on international trips.

White House Communications Director Steven Cheung defended the aircraft, calling it a “state-of-the-art" plane equipped with high-level security measures to protect the president and his staff.

However, former Air Force officials have questioned the decision to deploy the aircraft on an overseas mission. Former Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall told the news outlet that the rapid retrofit likely meant some security, communications and support systems could not be fully installed, adding that he was surprised to see the aircraft used outside the United States, particularly during heightened tensions involving Iran.

Lawmakers have called on the administration to disclose whether the overhaul of the Qatari plane, which the Air Force oversaw in the course of the last year, provided sufficient security upgrades. The safety of the aircraft is critical not only for the president, but also for the large entourage of White House staff, Secret Service officials, journalists and guests who fly aboard.

The Pentagon’s permanent replacement aircraft, still under construction by Boeing, are expected to include full self-defence systems, advanced communications and other specialised capabilities required for presidential travel. Until then, questions remain over whether the temporary aircraft offers the same level of protection as the decades-old Air Force One it is intended to supplement.
