Novak Djokovic has been fined £5,600 by Wimbledon for an audible obscenity during his fourth-round match against Roman Safiullin. The penalty is believed to stem from one of his emotional outbursts after losing serve, though officials did not specify the exact incident. Djokovic later admitted he was "not proud" of his on-court meltdown. Several other players, including Joao Fonseca and Hubert Hurkacz, were also fined for code violations during the tournament.
Novak Djokovic's bid for another Wimbledon title has taken an unexpected turn after tournament officials fined the Serbian star £5,600 for an audible obscenity during the Championships. The penalty appeared on the All England Club's latest disciplinary list following Djokovic's fourth-round victory, adding another talking point to his eventful campaign.
Although the tournament did not specify the exact incident behind the sanction, it is widely believed to be linked to one of Djokovic's emotional outbursts during his match against Roman Safiullin.
Novak Djokovic reacts after Wimbledon issues £5,600 fine
The seven-time Wimbledon champion endured a frustrating spell during the fourth-round contest when Safiullin broke his serve early in the third set. Djokovic responded with visible frustration, shouting an audible obscenity that prompted the chair umpire to issue him a formal warning.Later in the same set, another tense moment unfolded when Safiullin struck a powerful forehand directly toward Djokovic. After avoiding the ball, Djokovic vented again by tossing a loose tennis ball into the air and hitting it away. While Wimbledon has not officially confirmed which incident resulted in the fine, the disciplinary report listed Djokovic among several players sanctioned during the tournament. He received a £5,600 penalty for an audible obscenity committed on July 6.
Speaking after the match, Djokovic admitted he was disappointed with how he handled those emotional moments."Sometimes it helps to kind of just filter things that are building inside," Djokovic said of his outbursts. "Not something I'm proud of when I get warning or something like that, I have a meltdown. Not something I'm looking for, for sure. But when it happens, it happens."Just try to eliminate it, not think about it too long, move on to the next point and the next task at hand."
Wimbledon fines list grows as more players face penalties
Djokovic was not the only player disciplined during this year's Championships. The latest fines released by Wimbledon showed multiple competitors penalized for on-court conduct throughout qualifying and the main draw.Brazilian teenager Joao Fonseca was also fined £5,600 for racket abuse, while Hubert Hurkacz received the same financial penalty for an audible obscenity. Julian Cash was handed an identical fine for a dress code violation during the doubles competition.Andre Goransson received a £3,700 fine for unsportsmanlike conduct, while Tamara Korpatsch was penalized £2,200 for the same offense. Earlier in the tournament, players including Damir Dzumhur, Thanasi Kokkinakis, Corentin Moutet and Pierre-Hugues Herbert also appeared on Wimbledon's disciplinary list after various rule breaches. The fine is not expected to have any significant effect on Djokovic’s career earnings.
But it is also a further reminder that even the most decorated champions of the tournament are expected to adhere to the strict standards of conduct at Wimbledon. But the defeat has not slowed Djokovic’s pursuit of another Grand Slam title. He admitted after the match that maybe he had let his emotions get the better of him for a second, but stressed that his focus now is on moving on and concentrating on the challenges still to come at the All England Club.
