House damaged by lone elephant
Chatra: Panic gripped several villages under Giddhaur police station limits in Chatra district after a wild elephant went on a rampage late on Thursday night, damaging houses, destroying a goat farm and killing livestock.According to locals, the elephant entered Tilri village and extensively damaged a goat-rearing farm jointly run by farmers Kailash Dangi, Sunil Kumar and Rajesh Dangi. The jumbo razed the structure, destroyed equipment and consumed stored grain, causing heavy losses to them. A house belonging to one Sona Mahto was also badly damaged.The elephant also uprooted a hand pump near the farm, leaving the affected families facing an acute drinking water problem.
After creating havoc in Tilri, it reportedly moved to Rupin village, where it killed a cow belonging to one Rohini Devi.Two other cattle owned by Chetlal Yadav and Sanjay Yadav were injured, while parts of their houses were also damaged, said locals. A forest team led by Nishant Kumar reached the spot after receiving information and assessed the damage."One elephant strayed away from its herd and moved through inhabited areas. People have been advised to remain alert and avoid venturing out at night. Details of losses are being compiled and forwarded to the department to ensure compensation to affected families,” he said.
