US President Donald Trump triggered fresh controversy and curiosity after saying he would consider purchasing the financially troubled Spirit Airlines, raising questions about whether a sitting president could end up overseeing a struggling commercial airline while in office.
“Spirit is an airline that has had some trouble. They have some good aircrafts, some good assets, and when the price of oil goes down, we’d sell it for a profit," Trump said. He later added that the government was considering “helping them out, meaning bailing them out or buying it, just buy it."
Trump did not clarify whether he meant a direct federal acquisition, a temporary rescue package or another ownership structure but his remarks come as the White House is already said to be in advanced talks over a possible federal bailout for the low-cost carrier.
According to reports from a recent bankruptcy hearing, Spirit Airlines is discussing a rescue package that could total around $500 million. If pursued, it would mark a rare case of targeted federal support for a single airline rather than an industry-wide intervention.
The White House blamed the previous Joe Biden administration for blocking Spirit’s proposed merger with JetBlue in 2024, arguing the airline would have been in a stronger financial position had that deal gone through.

Spirit Airlines welcomed Trump’s support as the company’s CEO Dave Davis said he looked forward to working with the administration on a solution that protects jobs, preserves competition and keeps fares affordable.
Why Spirit Airlines Is In Trouble?
Spirit Airlines built its brand on ultra-low fares but the Covid-19 pandemic severely damaged demand and finances across the aviation sector. While travel later recovered, many passengers shifted toward airlines offering more comfort and flexibility, hurting discount carriers.
Spirit Airlines has remained unprofitable since the pandemic downturn and has filed for bankruptcy twice, most recently in August 2025. It had planned to emerge through debt restructuring earlier this year, but rising jet fuel prices linked to the Iran conflict added fresh pressure. The airline has warned it could be forced out of business if costs continue rising.
Can A Sitting US President Run An Airline?
Trump’s comments have also raised political and ethical questions as even within the administration, there appears to be hesitation. US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy warned against “putting good money after bad," questioning whether another rescue would simply delay the inevitable.
