World number one Aryna Sabalenka continued her commanding run at Wimbledon, advancing to the quarter-finals without dropping a set after a hard-fought 6-4, 7-6(4) victory over Elise Mertens on Sunday.
Sabalenka, who has yet to reach a final at Wimbledon, remains the top contender in the women’s draw — and the last of the top six seeds still standing. After missing the tournament in 2023 due to injury and being banned in 2022 amid the suspension of Russian and Belarusian athletes following the invasion of Ukraine, the 27-year-old looks determined to make up for lost time.
Just as in her third-round win over Emma Raducanu, Sabalenka faced stiff resistance but held her ground. She opened the match with a dominant 4-1 lead in the first set, only for Mertens to claw her way back to 4-4.
The three-time Grand Slam champion then stepped up her game, winning eight of the next 11 points to clinch the first set.
Mertens, looking to snap a nine-match losing streak against Sabalenka, secured an early break in the second set. But the Belarusian was relentless, breaking back to level the score at 3-3.
Both players held serve through the remainder of the set, forcing a tie-break. Mertens once again gained the early edge, but Sabalenka’s explosive groundstrokes pinned the Belgian behind the baseline. A crisp volley winner sealed the win for Sabalenka after just over 90 minutes on court.
With her tenth straight win over Mertens secured, Sabalenka now turns her attention to Germany’s Laura Siegemund, whom she will face in the quarter-finals on Tuesday.
