Taylor Fritz advanced to the Wimbledon quarter-finals in swift fashion on Sunday after Australia’s Jordan Thompson was forced to retire due to injury, with the scoreboard reading 6-1, 3-0 in the American’s favor.

The fifth-seeded American, who endured two five-set marathons in the opening rounds, enjoyed a far easier outing on Court One. Fresh off winning his fourth Eastbourne title last month, Fritz looked sharp and focused from the outset.

He broke Thompson twice in a lightning-quick first set that lasted just 21 minutes, then surged to a 3-0 lead in the second. At that point, Thompson called for a medical timeout to treat an apparent thigh issue.

The Australian returned briefly but struggled to move and quickly went down 40-0 in the fourth game. He then signaled that he could no longer continue, bringing the match to an abrupt end after just 41 minutes.

“He’s been playing five-setters," said Fritz, 27. “He was out playing a long doubles match yesterday, you know, so he’s been battling out here, and I respect him for coming out. Obviously, his body’s not right, so I feel bad for him."

Thompson, currently ranked No. 44 in the world, had also gone the distance in his first two singles matches at Wimbledon, which likely contributed to his physical struggles.

Khachanov Awaits in the Last Eight

With the win, Fritz reaches his second career Wimbledon quarter-final and will now face 17th seed Karen Khachanov of Russia. Khachanov progressed earlier in the day with a routine 6-4, 6-2, 6-3 victory over Poland’s Kamil Majchrzak on Court Two.

Fritz has spent significant time on court during the tournament. He survived a five-set battle against Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in the opening round, followed by another five-setter against Canada’s Gabriel Diallo. He then defeated Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in four sets, totaling nearly 10 hours on court across three matches.

Now, with a relatively short fourth-round outing, Fritz will have the benefit of extra rest as he sets his sights on reaching his first Wimbledon semi-final.
