Eighth seeds Veronika Kudermetova and Elise Mertens overcame a set deficit to claim their first Grand Slam title as a pair by defeating Hsieh Su-Wei and Jelena Ostapenko 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 in the Wimbledon women’s doubles final on Sunday.
For Russia’s Kudermetova, this was her inaugural major title, whereas Belgian Mertens secured her fifth Grand Slam in doubles and her second Wimbledon victory, having previously won in 2021 with Hsieh.
Kudermetova initially held serve to take a 3-1 lead in the first set, but the fourth seeds responded by winning five consecutive games. Kudermetova spearheaded the comeback in the second set, holding serve twice as the pair achieved three successive breaks to force a deciding set.
In the third set, Hsieh won a prolonged baseline exchange with Kudermetova to secure the first break, followed by Ostapenko holding serve without conceding a point, putting them 4-2 ahead.
However, Hsieh’s faulty returns hit the net, allowing the eighth seeds to break back. Kudermetova then held serve to take a 5-4 lead. Ostapenko’s error during a 26-shot rally gave their opponents match point.
Kudermetova’s precise backhand cut across the court to clinch the victory, fulfilling her dream of lifting the trophy at the All England Club, after having lost the 2021 final with Elena Vesnina to Mertens and Hsieh.
What Happened In The Wimbledon Juniors Final?
Ivan Ivanov from Bulgaria claimed his first Grand Slam title on Sunday by defeating Ronit Karki from the United States 6-2, 6-3 in the Wimbledon juniors final.
The 16-year-old Ivanov became the second Bulgarian to win the title, following Gregor Dimitrov’s victory in 2008.
Ivanov did not face a single break point against Karki and finished the match with 22 winners, while his opponent managed only six.
Karki was aiming to become the first qualifier to win the title since Noah Rubin in 2014.
