Australian Open champion Madison Keys became the latest high-profile casualty at Wimbledon, falling in straight sets to Germany’s Laura Siegemund on Friday.

The American sixth seed was beaten 6-3, 6-3 on Court Two in a third-round upset.

Keys’ exit continues a stunning trend in the women’s draw, with five of the top six seeds now out of the tournament. Coco Gauff, Jessica Pegula, Jasmine Paolini, and Zheng Qinwen had already exited early, leaving only world number one Aryna Sabalenka still in contention.

The 29-year-old Keys, who lifted her maiden Grand Slam title at the Australian Open in January by defeating Sabalenka, has yet to progress beyond the quarterfinals at Wimbledon in 11 attempts. Her performance on Friday was marred by inconsistency, racking up 31 unforced errors in a frustrating outing.

Siegemund Makes History at 37

For Siegemund, ranked 104th in the world, the win marks her first appearance in the Wimbledon fourth round — and a historic moment.

At 37, she is now the oldest woman left in the draw. Her previous best Grand Slam result was a quarterfinal run at the 2020 French Open.

“When you beat a great player like Madison, you have to be really happy," Siegemund said after the match. “I managed to keep my nerve in the end. If you don’t have nerves in this moment, you’re probably dead."

Reflecting on her performance, Siegemund added: “It was a big opportunity. You just take a deep breath and remember your strategy. All the girls on the tour are perfectionists. I’m the same, but there was no pressure for me. I don’t feel like I need to prove anything anymore."

For Keys, it was a bitter Fourth of July, while back home, Americans celebrated Independence Day without one of their top hopes advancing at Wimbledon.
