Novak Djokovic took another confident step toward a historic 25th Grand Slam title with a commanding straight-sets victory over British wildcard Dan Evans in the Wimbledon second round on Thursday.

The seven-time Wimbledon champion needed just one hour and 47 minutes to cruise past Evans 6-3, 6-2, 6-0 on Centre Court, delivering a clinical performance that left no room for an upset.

Seeded sixth this year, Djokovic appeared fully recovered from the stomach issues that troubled him during his opening-round, four-set win against Alexandre Muller. After that match, he credited his recovery to “miracle pills" that helped him turn things around.

Evans, now 35, had one career win over Djokovic — a 2021 clay-court triumph in Monte Carlo — but he was no match for the Serb on grass. Djokovic, who had never lost a major match to a player ranked as low as Evans, wasn’t about to let history slip away.

There were no signs of discomfort this time as the 38-year-old Serb produced a ruthless display, firing 46 winners to dismantle the world No. 154.

Closing in on History

Thursday’s win marked Djokovic’s 99th career victory at Wimbledon — a feat that brought a moment of reflection from the tennis legend.

“It means I’ve been playing quite a long time!" he said with a smile. “I still enjoy it. This court has given me so much. Wimbledon has a special place in my heart. Any history made here is obviously extra special."

Djokovic has not added to his major tally since winning the US Open in 2023, leaving him tied with Margaret Court at 24 Grand Slam titles. But he is determined to use the grass courts of Wimbledon — where he has historically thrived — to finally capture No. 25.

A win this fortnight would also see Djokovic match Federer’s men’s record of eight Wimbledon singles titles, a milestone that would further cement his legacy.
