The alleged mistreatment of Bengal-speaking migrants in BJP-ruled states is likely to become a key plank for the Trinamool Congress in the 2026 assembly polls, with its supremo, Mamata Banerjee, giving a target to TMC cadres to win 206 seats in the state election and then move to remove the BJP from power at the Centre.

Addressing the TMC’s Martyrs’ Day rally in Kolkata, the West Bengal Chief Minister alleged that the BJP and the Election Commission are conspiring against Bengal and want to remove Bengalis from the voter list. But she said her government will not allow an exercise like the Election Commission’s ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in Bihar in her state.

“Bengal has 1.5 crore migrants from other states, but they never face any problem," she said.
