With squash set to make its Olympic debut, India’s top-ranked player Anahat Singh believes the Los Angeles 2028 Games will dominate every athlete’s focus in the coming years.
Speaking in Mumbai, Anahat said the inclusion of squash in the Olympics has given players a new ultimate goal. “It’s incredibly exciting. This is the first time squash will be part of the Olympics, and athletes have been eagerly waiting for this moment," she said at a pre-tournament press conference for the JSW Indian Open.
She noted that while events like the Commonwealth Games were once the pinnacle, the Olympics now stand above all. “Competing at the Olympics and winning a medal is every athlete’s dream," she added.
Looking ahead, Anahat expects the Olympic push to shape training and ambitions. “For the next few years, that’s going to be everyone’s target. Personally, I’ll be working towards being fully prepared for the Olympics and hopefully winning a medal for the country," she said.
The Indian Open, a PSA Copper event, offers players valuable ranking points and momentum ahead of the Asian Games later this year.
India’s second-highest ranked male player, Ramit Tandon, pointed how Olympic inclusion has boosted the sport’s ecosystem. “The Olympics is the biggest stage, and being part of it is a dream. It has also brought in corporate support like JSW, which is helping events like this take place," he said, adding that squash in India has seen significant growth as a result.
Tandon also pointed out concerns beyond the court, including geopolitical tensions affecting travel and scheduling. While he is set to compete in London next, uncertainty remains around upcoming tournaments, including the World Championships in Cairo.
“There’s some unpredictability in planning right now, but we’re monitoring the situation closely," he said.
Despite these challenges, both players remain focused on key competitions ahead. Tandon emphasised that the Asian Games will be crucial, especially as they play a role in Olympic qualification.
“That’s where we want to peak this year," he said.
Anahat, meanwhile, is taking a step-by-step approach. After winning two bronze medals at the 2023 Asian Games, she is aiming higher this time.
“I’m focusing on one tournament at a time, but the Asian Games are definitely on my mind. Hopefully, I can improve on my last performance and aim for silver or gold," she said.
