Luis Díaz revealed that former Liverpool teammate Florian Wirtz played a key role in encouraging his move to Bayern Munich, as the Colombian international was officially unveiled by the Bundesliga champions on Thursday.
The German giants reportedly paid up to €75 million ($86.5 million) for the 28-year-old winger, who signed a contract through 2029.
Although Díaz and Wirtz only spent a brief period together at Liverpool, the Colombian said their conversations helped shape his decision to join Bayern.
“I spoke to Florian a few times, and he told me that the Bundesliga is very intense—similar to the Premier League," Díaz said during his unveiling. “He said it’s very physical, the stadiums are always full, and that I’d enjoy it. He wished me luck. I thank him for that."
Wirtz, who played a central role in Bayer Leverkusen’s domestic double last season, made a surprise switch to Liverpool in June, shortly before Díaz departed the English champions for Germany.
Unfazed by Price Tag
Díaz now becomes Bayern’s third most expensive signing in club history, behind only Harry Kane (€95M) and Lucas Hernandez (€80M). But the Colombian downplayed any pressure that might come with the hefty price tag.
“I can’t say if I’m worth €70 million," he said. “I just want to settle in here as quickly as possible. That’s the most important thing."
Díaz joins Bayern after a trophy-laden spell at Liverpool, where he won the Premier League, FA Cup, and two League Cups during his three-and-a-half years at Anfield.
Last season, he played 50 matches across all competitions, scoring 17 goals and providing eight assists as Liverpool clinched the English league title for a record-equalling 20th time under new manager Arne Slot.
