At the farewell ceremony for Iran’s late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the country’s Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf was in tears. With hands clasped in prayer, Ghalibaf broke down as he bid a final goodbye to the slain leader.
The funeral ceremony for Ali Khamenei –– who was killed on February 28 in the coordinated US-Israeli strikes –– began on Friday in Tehran. He was killed with several other family members in late February as the US-Israel alliance unleashed strikes on Tehran, leading to a massive conflict in the region.
Ghalibaf, the chief negotiator from the Iranian side in talks with the US, was seen standing alongside the country’s Foreign Minister, Seyed Abbas Araghchi, and other top officials. Araghchi also appeared emotional as mourners gathered at the farewell ceremony for Khamenei.
Khamenei’s coffin was brought to the Grand Mosalla religious complex in Tehran on Friday, with the casket draped in colours of the Islamic Republic which he governed for over three decades.
Ghalibaf urged the public on Friday to attend the ceremonies in large numbers as a way to avenge the Supreme Leader’s assassination. “The nation’s call for vengeance must ring in the ears of the whole world," he said.
High Alert, Massive Turnout
Between 15 and 20 million people are expected to assemble during the six-day funeral ceremony for the slain leader, prompting a high security alert across the country, especially around the capital of Tehran.
A funeral procession will be carried through the streets of Tehran on Monday, followed by another procession in the holy city of Qom. Located about 140 kilometers southwest of Tehran, Qom is Iran’s foremost centre of Shia Islamic scholarship.
On July 9, the procession will travel to the holy city of Mashhad, Khamenei’s hometown, where he will be laid to rest at the Imam Reza shrine.
