Last year, football was rocked by the tragic deaths of Diogo Jota and his brother, Andre Silva, in a car crash in northern Spain. The loss sent shockwaves through the sport, leaving fans, teammates and former clubs in mourning.

When Wolverhampton Wanderers hosted Liverpool FC at Molineux in their first Premier League meeting since Jota’s passing, the grief was transformed into a powerful show of unity.

In the 18th minute, the number Jota wore during his time at Wolves, the entire stadium rose to applaud. What began as a home tribute quickly became a shared moment, as Liverpool supporters joined in.

Chants of “Diogo" echoed around the ground, while Wolves fans unveiled a large banner in his honour. In the away end, a banner read: “Obrigado Diogo, forever our number 20," referencing his Liverpool shirt number.

Jota made 313 combined appearances for Wolves and Liverpool during his time in England. He joined Wolves from FC Porto in 2017 and played a pivotal role in restoring the club’s Premier League status before earning a move to Anfield in 2020.

The tributes did not end there. In the 20th minute, Liverpool fans sang Jota’s song, with Wolves supporters clapping along — a poignant reminder of the bond he built across both fanbases. Further commemorations are planned when the sides meet in the FA Cup.

Earlier in the season, Wolves honoured Jota in their Premier League opener against Manchester City. A giant tifo draped across the South Bank depicted him celebrating in gold and black, alongside a banner reading: “We’ll remember you when you walk in fields of gold."

Jota’s wife, Rute Cardoso, attended that fixture, alongside former teammate Rúben Neves. His parents, Isabel and Joaquim Silva, were also present — visibly emotional as the stadium paid its respects.

It was football at its most human: rivalry paused, memories shared, and a player forever remembered.
