Woman Arrested for Aiding Convicts' Escape from Morigaon Jail

Guwahati: Police in Morigaon have arrested a woman for allegedly aiding the escape of two convicts from the district jail last month. The accused, Ajanta Deka of Jagiroad town, was taken into custody on Friday following revelations during the interrogation of the escaped convicts.According to Bhaskar Barman, officer-in-charge of Morigaon police station, Ajanta had secretly supplied a hacksaw blade to the convicts — Jiyarul Islam and Subrata Sarkar — during a jail visit. The tool was used to cut through iron bars, enabling their escape.“She visited both convicts monthly, which raised suspicions. During interrogation, Islam revealed that Deka had a long-standing relationship with Subrata Sarkar and assisted in the jailbreak,” Barman said.Deka was booked under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and produced before the Morigaon Chief Judicial Magistrate’s court.Islam and Sarkar, both serving 20-year sentences under the Pocso Act, escaped by cutting window bars and scaling the prison wall using a rope made of bedsheets and towels. Their absence was discovered during the morning roll call, prompting a week-long manhunt that led to their recapture.
