Davanagere: A woman allegedly assaulted a PSI on duty and obstructed official work during a drunk-driving check on Shamanur Road in Davanagere city on June 21, but the incident came to light on Friday after a video went viral.The injured officer was identified as 48-year-old PSI Shakuntala of Davanagere South traffic police station. The accused has been identified as Preeti, and a case has been registered at Vidyanagar police station.In her complaint, the PSI stated that the assault occurred during a routine drunk-driving check. At around 11.45pm, a woman travelling in a black Thar created a ruckus with staff at the Shamanur checkpost.
After being alerted, PSI Shakuntala rushed to the spot with personnel. Police suspected that the woman was under the influence of alcohol. Her husband was also present and tried to calm her.When the PSI asked her name, she allegedly identified herself as Preeti and began verbally abusing police personnel, according to the FIR. When the officer attempted to conduct a breathalyser test, the woman allegedly shouted at her, knocked the device out of her hand and kicked her in the stomach.
Following the assault, the PSI moved towards the police vehicle, and with help from staff and bystanders, managed to recover. Amid the chaos, the accused fled in another car without undergoing the test.Police later seized the vehicle. After receiving treatment at CG Hospital, the PSI filed a complaint on June 22.A case has been booked under Sections 121(1), 132 and 352 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and further investigation is under way.
