Woman Dies After Consuming Poison In Greater Noida, Family Alleges Harassment By Husband, In-Laws

Police on Friday said she had been subjected to physical and mental harassment by her husband and in-laws.

A 32-year-old woman allegedly died by suicide after consuming poison in Greater Noida. Police on Friday said she had been subjected to physical and mental harassment by her husband and in-laws.

The deceased, identified as Sonika Bhati, was originally from Bulandshahr and had a love marriage with Subhash Sharma around 12 years ago, police said.

According to police, Sonika’s father, Rakesh Singh, alleged that she was subjected to physical and mental harassment by her husband and in-laws. Singh told them that Sonika had called him on May 20 and informed him about the alleged harassment.

On Thursday, Subhash informed Rakesh Singh to come to the Government Institute of Medical Sciences (GIMS) hospital in Greater Noida, where he found that his daughter had died after allegedly consuming a poisonous substance.

Officials at Kasna Police Station said that further investigation is underway.

The incident came days after two women – Twisha Sharma in Bhopal and Deepika Nagar in Greater Noida – allegedly died due to dowry harassment. These cases have once again drawn national attention to dowry harassment in India.

Both women allegedly died under suspicious circumstances within a short period of marriage, and their families have accused the in-laws of harassment and dowry-related abuse.
